When I tell someone I work at the Mediterranean Health herbalist shop, they usually ask me what supplements I take and why. The answer varies as the years go by and my needs change, but this is what I currently take as a middle-aged woman with no medical problems.
My basics
A multivitamin to make sure I'm getting the vitamins and minerals I need. I like Nature's Plus Source of Life.
Fish oil. To support cognitive and cardiovascular health. Omega-3 TG is more easily absorbed than other omega-3 fatty acids.
Turmeric . It's a natural anti-inflammatory, and I've been taking it for less than a year. I started because of intense headaches right before and during my period. I don't take it daily, but I have noticed a significant reduction in the frequency and intensity of headaches since I started taking it.
Digestive enzymes. For me, they're essential, especially when I'm anxious and my meals aren't as organized as I'd like, also when I eat out, or when I'm worried I might have accidentally consumed gluten—I have celiac disease. Of course, they don't prevent or eliminate the symptoms of gluten consumption, but they do lessen their intensity. I take them occasionally, and they reduce my digestive discomfort, bloating, and gas. Árbol Verde enzymes are excellent.
Fiber . To supplement my daily fiber intake, I control my blood cholesterol. I'd love to take it every day because it makes me feel great, but it's one of the supplements I most often forget to take. Perhaps it's because I prefer to take it at night before bed, and it hasn't quite clicked into my routine. Fiber supplements are best taken with the husk, which is where the fiber is actually located. This is my favorite fiber supplement.
Prevention.
Probiotic & FOS . When temperatures drop, or when those around me start getting sick, I add both products to support my immune system. We have a product that contains probiotics, FOS, and fiber. I don't take it myself, but I have recommended it to friends.
Vitamin D. When the sun doesn't shine for too many days, especially at the end of winter, a lack of vitamin D can cause fatigue, depression, and other issues. The rest of the year, I prefer to go outside.
Collagen. I like collagen peptides because, although I know they are beneficial for bones and joints, I notice an improvement in the appearance of my skin. When I take collagen regularly, my skin feels smoother and has fewer wrinkles.
Of course, this is what I—a 40-year-old woman with no health problems—am currently taking. I also lead a healthy life—I exercise 3-4 times a week and eat a balanced diet. What you need depends on your medical history and your personal needs regarding illness, allergies, medications, etc. It's always advisable to consult a specialist.
