Many women come to our herbalist shops asking us about how to keep their intimate body parts healthy.
The most common problem is vaginal candidiasis, formerly known simply as "yeast infection." However, other problems such as dryness or mild bacterial infections also occur.
Although there are different causes for these intimate problems, the same healthy habits help prevent them all.
  1. Wash the area daily with plenty of water. You can use a pH-neutral soap, which won't upset the vaginal mucosa, whose pH is more acidic than that of the skin. Never use shower gel; its pH is different from what you need for proper intimate care. Deodorants or colognes for the intimate area are not recommended, as they can cause dryness and irritation. Avoid using washcloths or sponges, as these are breeding grounds for germs and bacteria. It's best to use your clean hands. Argital's intimate wash is recommended.
  2. Keep a cotton towel, preferably organic, specifically for intimate drying in the bathroom. It's best not to use the same bath towel you use to dry the rest of your body.
  3. After having sex, it is advisable to urinate and/or shower to clean the intimate area and reduce the risk of infection.
  4. When you go to the bathroom, always use the front-to-back wiping technique, or use a bidet.
  5. Wear 100% cotton underwear, preferably organic. Avoid synthetic fabrics where bacteria can grow more easily, causing odors and poor breathability, as well as thongs. It's also best to hand wash underwear with a natural soap. BioBel soaps (available in our physical stores)
  6. Avoid very tight clothing, as it tends to cause sweating in the intimate area and does not allow perspiration, which can lead to the proliferation of bacteria due to excess moisture.
  7. During menstruation, it's best to use organic cotton pads or a menstrual cup. It's important to change them frequently and, whenever possible, wash and dry the area thoroughly. If using tampons, we recommend changing them more often to prevent blood from pooling.
  8. It's highly recommended that you stay well hydrated throughout the day with mineral water. Proper hydration promotes good lubrication of the intimate area, which prevents discomfort.
  9. If you experience vaginal dryness, several foods can help combat it, such as coconut flour, rich in magnesium and vitamin E; walnuts, excellent natural sources of vitamin E and magnesium; flax seeds, rich in lignans; and soy, with its high concentration of isoflavones. Other foods to consider include: organic natural yogurt and kefir, rich in probiotics that nourish the vaginal microbiota; cranberry juice, which prevents the growth of pathogenic bacteria; garlic, for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties; and leafy green vegetables, which have a high water content, promoting hydration and a diuretic effect.
  10. Finally, it's important to always be mindful of sugar intake—of all types—especially during a candida episode, as fungi feed on sugar and this can worsen the problem.

In addition, these supplements can help you prevent different types of problems.

ErgyPhilus Intima from Nutergia Laboratories is a probiotic specifically for the intimate area.

Sea Buckthorn, Green Tree Omega 7: Omega 7 is a mucous membrane moisturizer, which can help keep the woman's intimate area hydrated.

Although we generally do not recommend cosmetics for the intimate area, in case of vaginal dryness or discomfort due to that dryness - common during menopause - you can use coconut or olive oil to lubricate and moisturize that area naturally.
