Description
D-Mannose is a simple sugar, or monosaccharide, found in small amounts in fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, algae, and trees. Our bodies do not absorb this sugar. Its glycemic index is very low. When ingested, it is quickly passed through the kidneys and from there into the urinary tract, where it reaches high concentrations.
The bacterium Escherichia coli, which causes urinary tract infections, is attracted to this simple sugar. D-Mannose then adheres to the filaments of the E. coli bacteria, preventing it from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract. This prevents the infection from spreading, and the bacteria are eliminated through urine.
The American cranberry, Vaccinium macrocarpon, is rich in proanthocyanidins (PACs) that inhibit the clumping of e. coli bacteria and prevent adhesion to the bladder walls, facilitating their expulsion via urine.
The combination of D-mannose and American cranberry is highly effective in combating urinary tract infections. D-mannose is beneficial for gut flora, and cranberry has a significant antioxidant effect.
D-Mannose can be consumed by diabetics with their usual control.
