Cuidándome de Vacaciones en Colombia
by Paula Reyes Gamba

Hi, I'm Paula, and this is my first post on the Mediterranean Health blog. I've spent my life traveling, and I've had to learn to adapt my health and beauty routine to wherever I am. On vacation, perhaps because of the relaxation it brings, it's easier to take care of myself in some ways, but in others—like nutrition—it's more difficult. Today I'm going to explain how I took care of myself on my last vacation, when I was in Quindío, in the central-western region of Colombia, known for its coffee plantations.
I've learned that I usually come home with a cold after vacation—the change in routine, climate, and exposure to different germs and bacteria can affect the immune system. So, before traveling, I support my immune system by taking Flora 9 to strengthen my defenses. When I'm on vacation, I have to accept that it's not so easy to eat healthily... But what I always, always include in my day is a good portion of fruit. Fresh, local fruits and vegetables are a great ally, and everything tastes better outside the city.

I love the sun, but I try to be careful with my skin so it doesn't take its toll in a few years. I always use sunscreen, and I take breaks from the sun by reading in the shade, for example. After swimming, I use aloe vera gel to moisturize and soothe my skin. This is also my go-to remedy for mosquito bites, as it relieves the itching, preventing me from scratching.

Drinking more water is one of my New Year's resolutions, and I know I need to drink even more if I've been in the sun. Dehydration shows everywhere; I especially notice it in my feet, where those dreaded cracked heels appear. The best discovery for this has been shea butter . I always take it with me when I travel to keep my feet looking nice, and I also use it to moisturize my lips.

Even on vacation, which is usually for resting, I try to stay very active and take advantage of the time to explore as many new places as I can. Long walks, longer nights, and sunny days leave me physically tired, but my mind is completely refreshed.
